Castle District, Budapest

More information

This is one of Hungary's UNESCO sites with it's beautiful castle and palace complex of the Hungarian kings on the Buda side of the city, with a breathtaking panorama to the river Danube. Interesting museums, crooked streets, little cafes with terraces and traditional Hungarian restaurants add to the atmosphere. In the castle quarter you can also find the Fisherman's Bastion as well as the beautiful Matthias Church plus an underground labyrinth.

The first royal residence was built by King Bela IV of Hungary between 1247 and 1265. Around the keep, a small town called Buda started to grow. It was under King Sigmund’s reign when the castle was enlarged, he also strengthened the fortifications around the palace.
