Pápa

More information

Pápa is a historical and charming little town in Veszprém county located close to the northern edge of the Bakony Hills, and noted for its baroque architecture. Due to the multitude of heritage buildings the centre of the town is now protected.

Pápa has a large historical centre with a big round square in the middle of the town with renovated old burgher's houses, cafes, and museums, including the Blue-Dyeing Museum (Kékfestő Múzeum), set up in a former factory which produced clothes and other textiles dyed with indigo blue using a secret technique. The town also has a thermal bath as part of a newly constructed swimming complex, the Esterházy family's palace and the grand Roman Catholic church dominating the town square. Between the centre of town and the baths is a large park ideal for a pleasant stroll after lunch. The NATO airbase is here where three C17 Globemaster aircraft are based.

Near Pápa Gyor is also a town worth visiting and if you are in the area it would be a mistake to miss out The Benedictine monastery at Pannonhalma.
