More information

Gyöngyös is a small town with Art-Nouveau and Baroque buildings around the main square in Heves county, 80 km (50 mi) east of Budapest. Situated at the foot of the Sárhegy and Matra mountains, it is the home of numerous food production plants, including milk production and sausage factories. It is also the home of many vineyards on the slopes of the Sárhegy.

The town is a great starting point to take the forest train going to Matrafured. Train runs in March and April at weekends and from Easter everyday until end of October.

On the main square buildings were reconstructed after a disastrous fire started in the local hospital in 1917, destroying a number of buildings housing important Jewish institutions and leaving in all around 8,000 homeless.

There are many museums and places of interest such as the Orczy mansion, home to the Matra Museum and the Saint Bartholomew's Church and its treasury.
