Esztergom Basilica

More information

Esztergom is a charming riverside town and the seat of the prímás (see Primate) of the Roman Catholic Church in Hungary, north of the capital.

Its lavish cathedral, the Esztergom neo-classical Basilica is gracefully standing on top of Castle Hill. It is the largest church in Hungary, from it's cupola the view is magnificent and the Bakocz Chapel with an altar carved from white Carrera marble is truly incredible. Esztergom used to be the capital of Hungary from the 10th till the mid-13th century until King Béla IV of Hungary moved the royal seat to Buda. Today it is the official seat of the Constitutional Court of Hungary. If you walk across the Maria Valeria bridge, which connects Hungary with Slovakia, you will have great views from both sides.

We are organising private tours from Budapest with English speaking driver to the basilica and around the Danube Bend.  Please sign up if interested.
