The Hungarian State Opera House (Hungarian: Magyar Állami Operaház) is a neo-Renaissance opera house located in central Budapest, on Andrássy Ut, which is a beautiful boulevard leading to Heroes Square at City Park. 

Originally known as the Hungarian Royal Opera House, it was designed by Miklós Ybl, a very famous19th century Hungarian architect. 

The long-awaited moment in Hungarian opera life arrived on September 27, 1884, when, in the presence of Franz Joseph I. the Opera House was opened amid great pomp and ceremony. Performances quickly gaining a reputation for excellence in a repertory of about 45 to 50 operas and about 130 annual performances. The Hungarian State Opera, beside its outstanding Hungarian artists, has always maintained high professional standards, inviting international stars like Renée Fleming, Cecilia Bartoli, Monserrat Caballé, Placido Domingo, Luciano Pavarotti, José Cura, Thomas Hampson and Juan Diego Flórez to perform on its stage. 

Today, the Opera House is home to the Budapest Opera Ball, a society event dating back to 1886.
